Earn While You Learn program

All students need subject matter guidance, but at their own time and pace. Mostly, this is not feasible during campus teaching – necessitating tutorials or TAs. Colleges are always on the lookout for programs and avenues to vitalize academic focus and rigor in their students and infuse spirit of enterprise and self-development in their graduates. Senior students seek ways to distinguish themselves and showcase their entrepreneurship – some pocket money is a welcome addition!

The EWYL Program offered under 2Learn Campus Programs fulfills all above and more. It aspires to enable knowledgeable senior M.Tech/ MCA students to become 2Learn Student Guides and teach 2Learn courses to junior students using our 2-teacher flip teach methodology – which saves time and effort of teacher and the taught and is more effective than traditional teaching methods.

The program aspires to prepare learners to secure a Distinction grade or a high-first division in the upcoming semester, subject to proper study and timely completion of courses. The platform combines our interactive-video, teaching-learning platform and content with in-person assessment and guidance sessions conducted by Student Guides, to ensure high-quality success for 2Learners.

Benefits for Student Guides

  1. Not many good EWYL opportunities are available as it is for in-college students. This is a good opportunity for young, knowledgeable, and ambitious aspirants to generate extra income proportional to their efforts, at a low investment of time and effort, from an activity which is synergistic to their current academics, is valuable to teacher and the taught, and is quite respectable.
  2. Build resume-differentiators.
    1. Brightens placement prospects and candidate-appeal by showcasing entrepreneurial zeal, time-management for self and the team, multi-tasking abilities, leadership, communication, and team-handling abilities.
    2. Positioning-fit for upcoming and much-in-demand capabilities of technical presentation, product demonstration, training etc
  3. Enrich core subject knowledge – ‘Teaching is Learning Twice over’, so in essence Guides are improving their subject competency, and in turn preparing for competitive and placement challenges.
  4. Networking within junior fraternity begets visibility and builds life-long bonds as a mentor.

Benefits for Campus

  1. IITs and NIT in India, as well as most marquee campus abroad, have a robust TA system which serves 3 key objectives:
    1. Improve academic outcomes and scholastic abilities of junior students. This is investing in a virtuous cycle – better results – better placements – better admissions – higher revenues – higher reputation
    2. Reduce faculty load so they can focus on teaching core concepts and devote more time towards research and fostering industry partnership, thereby increasing campus brand salience.
    3. Generate scholarship for senior students while investing 10 or less hours per week, and in the process develop valuable collateral-competencies.
  2. Foster a strong student kinship and alumni connect, which will yeild good returns in due course.
  3. Uplift the overall academic rigor in the campus.
  4. Cultivate Faculty – Student-Guide collaboration, while instilling an appreciation in Student-Guides for the work and effort Teachers invest in their teaching.

Benefits for Students

Last by not the least, it is a wonderful opportunity for student learners to get in-person guidance and doubt clearing, with assured, timely course completion, at a fraction of the cost they would have incurred for similar outcomes in a traditional tutorial setup.

Observances

The Campus has to play the crucial role of identifying appropriate Guides and Students who can benefit from, and do justice to the proposition

Guides must have and exhibit adequate confidence in their subjects to handle student queries effectively, a proclivity and an ability to guide, motivate, and communicate clearly; and the ability to independently execute this program based on 2Learn platform, norms and guidelines.

The course description, composition, syllabus etc is as available under Self Study Programs. Guided Study is offered with Professional Enrolment Option at the time of course registration on the ‘Self Study Programs’ course pages.

How is Guided Study different from Traditional Tuitions?

College teaching remains ineffective for many students, for a variety of reasons. For effective exam prep students look at other means – guides, notes, YouTube videos and in-person tuitions.

In traditional tuitions as we know them, the teacher start teaching subject matter from the scratch and till the end. This is great, provided there is sufficient time. unfortunately Professional course students just don’t have the time or energy to travel and sit on hard benches again after a long day at college. Apart from travel and preparation, too much time is invested for these classes, with little apparent output.
Students feel much better off with self-study at their own pace. They seek subject-specific, syllabus-customisedm, complete, authentic, high-quality audio-video content, which should have been taught by excellent teachers, with integrated assessments and solutions for self-checking, and laid out in a nice understandable way. Unfortunately, in most cases the search turns out to be elusive. YouTube is like “water-water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”. finding level-appropriate, complete and authentic material is difficult. more on that later. NPTEL is good for certification, and maybe research but not for semester exams, and then these are old videos with grainy quality.

And then there is the big question of everyday discipline and dedication of time to task, doubt clearing, and problem solving practice. Some students can manage on their own, but most students need hand holding on what to study, how to study, and how much time each topic and the overall course will take; and how do they ensure the daily descipline to put it all together in time for exams.

A typical core course requires 30+ teaching hours for cover concepts, not including PYQ solving. Based on their seniority and demand, tuition faculties charge 600 to a 1000 per hour for one-on-one sessions – which for most students is steep. Group sessions are difficult to locate.

This program blends the advantages of high quality professional teacher, syllabus-customised and exam-oriented content, systematic approach, with the magic of In-person assistance to create a unique and beneficial blend for students at a fraction of cost of traditional tuitions.

What is a Batch, How many Batches can I run each semester?

Two Batches per subject can occur per semester.
Preparatory commences close to the start of the semester and runs for approximately 8 weeks with 1 weekly guidance session
Revisionary usually starts a month before the final semester exams, runs for 4 weeks with 2 guidance sessions per week. While the coverage and syllabus is similar in both seasons, evidently students have more time in Prep Season compared to a faster-paced Rev Season.  Typically, students need guidance in their core subjects, which could number between 1 to 4 per semester. Students may choose to distribute their subjects across the two Seasons for convenience, focus, and for best results.
Based on time and effort, multiple subjects can be taken up per semester.

Which is better - Sequential or Spaced-Recall study plan?

Sequential Study Plan,

  1. All modules in each topics are studied sequentially and completed on the same day. For instance the ALM-SQ-ORM-PSM-PSQ sequence is followed on the same day.
  2. Topics are scheduled daily and early in the week, rather than later.

Spaced-Recall Study Plan,

  1. For each topic, ALM, SQ and ORM are studied on Day 1, and PSM and PSQ/TPQ are studied on D+2.
  2. Multiple Topics can be started on any one day.
  3. Topics are front-loaded to ensure timely coompletion.
  4. The SR plan is designed for better, and repeated recall as opposed to Sequential Study.

The Choice is plan will rest with the Guide.

Guide will set up the daily calendared goals for students, and monitor progression in real time.

As a Guide, what investment of Time should I anticipate, and what can be my returns on them?

  • There is 30-40% subject back in most core subjects in Affilating University colleges in B.Tech. For a class of 60 students that translates to at least 18 students. With due diligent approach, a Guide should be able to approach at least 10 students successfully, and as many for fresh attempts.
  • As a Guide, you can offer 2 seasons per sem.  Each season requires 8 sessions. Usually a 1-hour session should be sufficient for 1 to 5 students, and a somewhat longer session with increased enrolments.
  • A CS Guide can potentially teach 3-4 subjects of BTech, Diploma, and Applied Sciences for each targeted year. So a FY BT student can potentially teach 9 subjects of 1st year (across BTech, Diploma and  Applied Sc (BCA, BSc) and 9 subjects of 2nd year, with an investment of 18-22 hours per week. With 7 enrols avg per Group, this guide can have 126 students per batch all by own effort, and more if targetting several colleges. The number of enrols depends on the willingness, availability and proximity of students, and off course Guide’s time, motivation, talent, and effort. Other investments may include time towards performance analysis, messaging, sundry query handling, marketing etc. Guides can expect a revenue of 2-4k per enroll, subject to a number of factors.
  • Based on the above, you can do the simple math to arrive at the revenue potential for you

Why can I not implement a similar program with YouTube or NPTEL?

A key difference between YT, NPEL etc., and the 2Learn system is the Active Learning pedagogy fostered through Confirmation of Learning. 2Learn has embedded several Just-in-time formative, as well as summative assessments for self-confirmation of learning. These are followed by Guide-led in-person assessment using rapid fire Active Quiz during Guidance Sessions.

Overall, the system of high-quality teaching content with video-embedded KCQs, followed by higher order SQQ, followed by ORM and outcome-linked notes, followed by PSM and then PPQ for each Topic, and then supported by KBL and StuQ, feedback, Course Forum and other gamifications is quite unique to 2Learn.

Last but not the least is the system of role and capability assignment to Guides who can leverage the Platform features to engage with their own separate group of students, and create value for students and themselves
